tv and social are about to be best friends again 👯

Hello and welcome to You Signed Up for This! Kit made me do it (so don't make them regret it 😂)

believe it or not there is a method to the madness you're about to embark on, but just remember what this is called. i literally warned you from the beginning.

i hope you enjoy this and i invite you to reply with your thoughts. i want to make this as collaborative and engaging as i can.

so here we gooooo!

Quick question.

do you remember @ midnight on comedy central?

you'd watch the show, jump on twitter, and try to be the funniest person in the room. the @ midnight account would like your tweets. people would like each others tweets. it was just a hilarious, chaotic "who's funnier" twitter party with a tv show playing in the background.

that energy is going to make a comeback and i have a few predictions on how it's gonig to happen.

networks will hire full-time creators for stealth accounts

the "let's just post clips from the show" format is getting stale, boring, redundant and i think marketing teams are waking up to this.

so here's what i think happens: networks and streamers will hire a team of full-time creators to run reaction accounts. the accounts will look like fan accounts, but will actually be owned by the network and highly curated. with the right creators, no one will be able to tell. those creators will be paid as full-time employees and possibly even covered under the SAG-AFTRA Influencer agreement.

maybe HBO hires kierra lewis to create reaction content to their new harry potter series.

this works perfectly for shows like american idol, the traitors, love island, the bachelor, etc. basically anything that turns a fandom into a sport.

see where this is going? 👀

networks will start newsletters and revive 2009 tumblr

audience ownership is the buZzWoRd of the moment, but someone in a conference room is going to ask a very uncomfortable question:

wait… do we actually have our fans' email addresses?

spoiler: they don't 🙃

people watch network tv live. no accounts necessary. streamers have the account holder's email, but that doesn't account for the entire family sharing one subscription. mom, dad, aunt sally, the cousin who "forgot" to get their own account.

what's going to happen? networks start collecting emails and sending blog-style, reactive content. think deep dives, hot takes, behind-the-scenes, and subscriber-only perks like early merch access, meetup invites, and bts content. (hi Kit)

why though? they'll be able to segment their audiences based on what shows and characters they care about and send content to those specific audiences and fans will eat it up.

2009 tumblr vibes but in your inbox. did rob do maura dirty? do we hate him for being a snake?? i'd subscribe.

dm automations will become the fan experience layer

voting for your favorite contestant via comment or DM. getting exclusive bts content dropped right into your messages. giveaways, meetups, secret drops , all happening inside instagram and facebook DMs.

this isn't a prediction that "social media might be useful." this is the next engagement format.

hi, Manychat.

american idol is already doing this ( dont think its with manychat, but comment voting has been introduced this season.)

but imagine this. they flash "DM 'TOP 10' For exclusive behind the scenes content from this weeks episode" on the screen and in your inbox you get videos from the judges, from the contestants, from the special guests.

or after you vote for your favorite via a comment you get a DM from the show and it's a video FROM that contestant that feels personal. like it was sent TO YOU. i mean come on. what are we doing???

those are my three predictions (for now).

i'm not saying i invented these ideas. i'm just saying i called them first 😇

(i felt that eye roll)

so when you see the traitors secret reaction account blowing up on instagram, or your favorite streamer sends you a newsletter that feels like a 2009 tumblr blog..

you know where you read it first.

i'd love to hear your thoughts on these predictions. do you think i'm totally off-base or is this what's in our future? reply and let me know!

see ya next friday!
